What Exactly Is An Email List?

Put simply, an e-mail list is a list of your own customers who you can send weekly projects (e-mails) to. If you are tech savvy enough, you can use coding to make your very own e-mail list. For those people who are not so fortunate, there are lots and lots of e-mail marketing sites that offer help.

During my research, I stumbled upon both MailChimp and MailerLite. They are both great for novice blog writers. With MailerLite, it is FREE for your very first 1,000 customers, but with the free plan, you still have access to all the functions, such as email automation and landing pages.

I presently use MailerLite due to the fact that I find it exceptionally easy. Naturally, keep doing your own research. You can quickly switch to a more efficient e-mail marketing site if you have a change of heart.

Why Do I Need An Email List?

Numerous novice blog writers believe that establishing an email list is meaningless when you initially start blogging; however, if you have a blog site (no matter how brand-new) you must have an e-mail list!

You will be undermining yourself if you do not have one. Your very own e-mail lists let you manage exactly what you send, how frequently, and why.

An e-mail list develops the best opportunity for you to get a better understanding of your audience on an individual level and vice versa. It’s crucial for developing a strong relationship with them. If you ever choose to offer a service or products, you will have a list of possible buyers.

    Hi there!
    Great article thank you!
This is exactly what I am struggling with. I have just started a travel blog focusing on Cape Town and safaris to Zimbabwe and Zambia in Africa.
So as it’s new, I don’t know what my readers want yet. I also have been reading more and more that people want fast information and don’t have time to read tons of writing so I am weary of doing an ebook. I am a bit stumped! Any thoughts please?
    Thanks so much!
    Sam

Hi Sam. It is obvious that your readers will want more information about safaris to Zimbabwe and Zambia in Africa. Your ebook does not have to be long. It can be several pages with the most important information about safari. Think about the first time you want to go to the safari – what information do you need?
You can also look at other sites about it and see what they offer to their site visitors.

The WHY question gives you clarity. Why sign up for your list? Answer honestly to find what readers want, and how to deliver what they want, to increase your list size. Not list building now but simply giving ample, targeted content and clearly promoting opt in forms goes a long way in building a list. Tweeted for you.

Excellent post. I’ve blogged for about 10 years but inconsistently. Now that my sons are almost HS seniors, I have more time to really get focused on blogging and monetizing. You made me realize just how important the email address list is. Thanks!

Hi Jelena! Thank you for this article. I’ve been blogging for a few years off and on and now have started to be more serious about writing and monetizing. I never really understood how to build an email list, but I’m learning. I have started with MailChimp. It’s a little more challenging than I thought, but I’m getting it done. This blog post was a huge help in finding a direction to go. Thanks and have a great day! 😊

I’m new at blogging and have started getting subscribers. I want to give them something useful for signing up. All the information in this post has helped me. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this post. One of my focus areas for October will be figuring out how to get started with my opt in, and I enjoyed reading your experience. I just did a deep dive into mailchimp so I know now how it works.

Getting an email list going is extremely hard. I have offered free gifts ebooks, and I have had my site for 8 months now and still only have 43 subscribers to date.
Once you get them, what do you do with them? Lol.
I know when I start getting emails from sites I have subscribed to I will delete them, I like getting the emails telling me they have a new post but when they start emailing 2 or 3 times a week for special offers, training, free this or free that.. I delete. I will assume I’m not the only one that feels that way. So how do you change That?

    • Jelena

Hi, Laurie. My freebie contains 6 days of affiliate training. After that, I send an email every 2 weeks with a few interesting information and a few links to new posts. I think it’s all over it because I’m the first to unsubscribe if I get too many emails.

Hi, Dawnmarie, find an adequate gift for site visitors is the majority of new bloggers problem. Think about who is the ideal person who would regularly return to your site and read about what posts. Is it male or female? How old is he? What is he doing? What would be her hobby? Married, single or divorced? Are there any children? What are her life goals? … Then consider what would help her in the situation she is in. That should be your freebie.

  • Melani

You are great. I think that is because you have a long years experience in blogging. Build email list is my next goal. Thank you for the encouragement. I have sign up in Mailer Lite already. I still confuse what I should give to my subscriber. My niche is about how to keep healthy and happy after 40 year old although our health risk increase. Would you like to give me an advice about what I can offer to my subscribers?

    • Jelena

Thank you, Melani! Please read my answer that I gave Dawnmarie.
Think about your site visitors. What is the most interesting topic on your site? Maybe you could offer them a weekly / monthly exercise plan, or recipes for healthy nutrition, a mini-meditation course, stress relief, … Thinking what would be interesting to you and why would you sign up for a someone site?
      I hope I did a little help.

  • Jennifer

Is it ok to offer a giveaway for people to sign up for your email list? Like a gift card? I started a travel/ lifestyle blog and cannot think of a single free thing to giveaway. Thanks!

    • Jelena

Jennifer, of course it`s ok. Maybe you can give some discounts on hotels, free travel planner or some tips how to save money while traveling. Also, you can check some other traveler sites to get an idea what you can offer.

    • Jelena

Thank you, Danielle. My advice is to work on the email list because there are people who are interested in your content. You know that in marketing 7 times more expensive to find a new client than to keep the old one. Wish you all the best.

  • Anissa

Hi ! I sent you my email! I wasn’t really sure how to make passive income. I’m still fairly new . I have about 12 post up. Is that enough to think about monetizing? I post every Monday and Thursday. Thoughts?

    • Jelena

Hi, Anissa! 12 posts are quite enough for your site to make money. Also, writing the post twice a week is a great rhythm.
But to really make money from your site, you need to know how it works. Not just writing and setting up on social networks. My honest recommendation is to go as a free member of the training that I have passed. I promise you in just 5 days to figure out how to make your site a money-making machine. CLICK HERE.

    • Jelena

It’s not that difficult if you know who visitors are on the site and what they want. Then you can offer them exactly what they are looking for. People will leave their email address very easily if they offer them some value in return.
